Adding an international drivers permit is highly advised. While the ASEAN agreement states all licenses from member states are recognized, in practice the police especially those outside Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City demand to see an International Drivers Permit. When the passport nationality (e.g., European/American) differs from the license (Indonesian), police will heavily scrutinize your documentation. If you have a proper residency permit you can apply at the officially sanctioned website that issues IDP’s: Indonesian National Police.
Photo Requirements are very strict:
Background: Must be solid white.
Clothing: Your shirt, blouse, or hijab cannot be white.
Visibility: Exactly two buttons of your shirt must be visible in the frame.
Face: You must look directly at the camera, you cannot wear glasses or contact lenses, and you cannot show your teeth
If you lack the required residency documentation, KITAP your only option is thru a 3rd party company and the majority of these companies print 1949 format IDPs

The IDP will be issued in 1968 format
The procedure of obtaining the International Driving License is pretty simple. All you need is to provide the following by email:
- A photo of your newly issued Indonesian driving license (front and back)
- Relevant driver information
- A recent passport style selfie following the above Indonesian requirements
- Your signature (scanned copy or a photograph on white background)
- Eye Color
- Year you started driving i.e. the year you were 16
- A ship to address with a contact #

If the spelling of your name on your driver’s license differs from that on your passport, you will need to submit an image of your passport photo. Both names will be recorded our records in accordance with the UN Auto Convention
